Rare oval reliquary containing a relic of the hair of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Ex Capillis BMV), decorated with gilt paperolles and Marian gouache on the reverse, Rome circa 1800.
Description
Superb double-sided oval reliquary, with a sawtooth-chased silver-plated metal mount, containing a precious relic “Ex Capillis BMV” — of the hair of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The interior features a radial composition of gilt paperolles, arranged on a celadon silk ground, around a central oval cartouche decorated with a blue and gold medallion.
The handwritten titulus in red ink, Ex Capillis BMV, clearly identifies the nature of the relic — a hair fragment encased in the center, under glass.
The reverse shows a delicately executed polychrome gouache, depicting the Virgin and Child in a soft iconography and sentimental, typical of Roman Marian piety at the turn of the 19th century.
Work of a Roman or Neapolitan workshop, circa 1790–1820, demonstrating both devotional and ornamental refinement.
This type of reliquary, associated with Marian relics (extremely rare), was intended for the private chapels of monks or contemplative convents.
