Large early 19th century engraving in its gold leaf gilded wooden frame. Empire period, Restoration, circa 1815-1820. It represents the famous painting "The Oath of the Horatii" after the original work by Jacques Louis David in 1785. It depicts the scene where the three Horatii brothers swear to their father the oath to win or die in the coming war against the Curiatii. This subject, a masterpiece of neoclassicism, had immense success under the Empire, exalting the military service of heroes. It gave rise to numerous interpretations, in engravings, oils on canvas, tapestries, clocks. Our engraving is a beautiful old print, presented in a very beautiful Empire period palmette frame, gilded with gold leaf and its original blown glass pane. Beautiful piece, very decorative, a beautiful addition to an Empire collection with a reference subject. The whole is in very good condition. Some water stains on the engraving.
