18th Century Circular Fly Box
Ivory fly box from the 18th century, the interior is lined with red tortoiseshell. The fly was also a fake mole made of black muslin and glued to the face. Flies were used to highlight the whiteness of the complexion. The use of flies was alrekwn in the 17th century. It was in the 18th century that it became a fashion attribute. The fly was an instrument of seduction, a gallant code to be deciphered according to its location.
