Biedermeier Style Side Table (1890-1900)

Refined side table with a root wood veneer top in the Biedermeier style dating from the last quarter of the 19th century.

The Biedermeier style, which reached its peak between 1815 and 1848, was a design movement that developed primarily in the German-speaking regions of Europe, such as Austria and Germany. This style emerged during a period of political calm following the Napoleonic Wars and reflected the growing influence of the bourgeois class. In furniture design, this meant a shift from the exuberant aristocratic splendor of previous styles to a more restrained domestic aesthetic. Biedermeier furniture is recognizable by its simple, functional forms combined with refined elegance. Therefore, the Biedermeier style has had a lasting influence on furniture design. At the end of the 19th century, many fine pieces of furniture were produced in this balanced style.

This table is a good example. Its design is inspired by classical models and also features obvious characteristics of the French Louis XVI style, with its refined fluted legs.
