"Mythological Fireback Of Ulysses At Calypso's"
Reissue of an 18th century mythological fireback depicting the episode from Homer's Odyssey epic where Ulysses, after the shipwreck of his only remaining ship, returned from the siege of Troy and ran aground on the island of Ogygia where the nymph Calypso, considered the queen of this paradise island, lived. She fell madly in love with him and managed to keep him on her island for seven years, even offering him immortality if he agreed to stay with her. But Zeus took pity on what his daughter Athena told him and sent his son Hermes to order him to release Ulysses. Calypso let him go and complete his return. He will therefore have been held by Calypso twice as long as by all the other obstacles placed in his path by Poseidon. Its weight is 211 kg.Bibliography:- CARPENTIER H., Plaques de cheminées, Tome premier, F.
