Carlo Canella was born on 6 April 1800 in Verona. Introduced to painting by his older brother Giuseppe, he studied at the Academy of Verona and made his debut in 1829 at the Milan Exhibition with a Portrait. In the 1837 Fine Arts Exhibition album, he was judged as follows: ‘Although he does not have all the inventive flair of his brother Giuseppe, he knows how to conduct his genre paintings of views with much study of reality and splendour of colour’. Numerous works also appeared in the Verona exhibitions.

Noteworthy among his works are the portrait of Canella in his studio, mistakenly identified by biographers and cataloguers of the time as a self-portrait of Giuseppe, and a work belonging to Marquis Zanoletti depicting a kitchen interior with a scene reminiscent of Induna, as well as the painting depicting the interior of Milan Cathedral, in which he signs himself 'Canella minore' and which the Museo di Castel Vecchio in Verona was about to purchase from its owner, Emma Wollisch of Vienna.

He died in Milan in 1879.
