Venice, The Doge's Palace At Sunset - Charles-clement Calderon, Oil On Canvas

Artist: Charles-clément Calderon
This charming painting by C. Calderon depicts a lively scene in the Venetian lagoon.
In the foreground, a gondola laden with passengers glides across the calm waters, while a large sailing ship unfurls its white sails, adding a touch of majesty to the composition. In the background, the iconic silhouette of the Doge's Palace and St. Mark's Campanile stand out, bathed in golden evening light.
The palette, delicately nuanced with warm, luminous tones, highlights the romantic and timeless atmosphere of Venice. The brushwork and reflections on the water reflect great pictorial mastery. The painting is presented in a rich period frame, carved and gilded with floral motifs, which particularly enhances the work.
Condition: Very good condition, with a uniform varnish and beautiful original colors.

About the artist: Charles-Clément Calderon (1870-1906) is a French painter; As a student of Cabanel, Calderon was trained in the French academic tradition: mastery of drawing, attention to detail, careful rendering of materials, fine finish.
Taste for Venice: like many painters of the late 19th century, Calderon was attracted by the particular lights, the reflections on the water, the elegant architecture of the Serenissima. Venice offered painters possibilities of light, color, reflections, contrasts, all elements conducive to showing their know-how.
An expressive touch for light: he does not content himself with a realistic rendering, but plays with light, the tones of the sky, the effects of the sunset, aquatic reflections to create an atmosphere, a feeling of serenity sometimes mixed with a subtle melancholy.
Despite his academic roots, Calderon seems to have been inspired by the decorative trends, landscape scenes and seascapes that animated European landscape painting of the Belle Époque: the notion of atmosphere, natural light, the movement of water, boats, life on the canals.
