Louis XVI period wedding chest of drawers, of Italian origin. Provenance: AGLIE castle, TURIN, former aristocratic and royal residence (ducal family of Savoy) Handwritten label preserved: "Nobile Signora Maria Oreglia d Isola", confirming membership of the OREGLIA D ISOLA family, Piedmontese nobility linked to TURIN. The function of wedding chest (cassone) is inherited from the Italian Renaissance, but still persists at the end of the 18th century in aristocratic families, where these chests/chests of drawers become prestigious pieces, often offered as dowries. This chest of drawers retains its original polychromy, its original blackened walnut base and its original interior.
