A pair of 19th-century English ormolu and porcelain candlesticks, each porcelain stem in the form of three entwined dolphins enriched in gilt, mounted chased foliate-form ormolu bases and candle sockets, which are detachable to permit two different sizes of candles to be used. 16.5cm (6.5in) high.
Condition: One of the pair leans slightly and is a little loosely joined together. However, its candle socket can be rotated to keep the candle vertical. It can also be easily dismantled for straightening and tightening, if desired. This candlestick has a small chip at the back of one of the heads of the dolphins (see images). On the other, one of the heads of the dolphins has a tight hairline (see images). The gilding of the brass/bronze is generally a little worn, with a few spots of verdigris.
References: A pair of these candlesticks, although slightly taller (8.5in, 21.6cm), sold at Christie's Auction 20869, 25 Oct 2022, Lot 1792, The Ann & Gordon Getty Collection: Decorations, Furniture, Lighting and Objects (sold for $3,528 USD).
