Funerary urn in green and yellow glazed earthenware
This urn belongs to the earliest productions of the Saintonge ceramic workshops.
Its funerary function follows in the continuity of Roman traditions.
It bears witness to the persistence of pagan practices in rural areas, in contrast with the rise of Christianity.
The decoration is executed with a cord-impressed technique.

Condition report:
The urn was broken in two at its midsection and subsequently reassembled.
On the reverse, part of the green glaze has flaked off, exposing the earthenware.
Losses are also visible around the rim.

A label describes the discovery of the urn:
“Funerary urn, found in 1889 in the old cemetery of Villefollet, canton of Brioux (Deux-Sèvres), offered by Bardet(?)”

Dimensions:
Height: 12 cm
Width: 9.5 cm
