Beautiful pair of jardinières with polychrome cloisonné enamel decoration on a turquoise and ochre background, in the "Byzantine" style, with two handles.
The vase itself is supported by a rectangular base, resting on four claw feet adorned with chimera heads.
Although unsigned, the high quality of execution and the stylistic similarities suggest a production by Ferdinand Barbedienne.
This is particularly evident in the chromatic richness of the decoration: the enamel displays a burst of nuanced colors which, together with the cloisons, compose a floral motif inspired by Byzantine art. The cloisons themselves actively contribute to the design, taking the shape of leaves and scrolls.
Louis-Constant Sévin (1821-1888) stood out as a designer and ornemanist in the decorative arts of the 19th century. He became head decorator at Barbedienne, creating acclaimed and award-winning works.
Some signs of aging.
