Rare pair of candlesticks in gilded bronze by Barbedienne, characterizing the neo Greek style.
The caryatids display a delicate drapery and are reminiscent of those of the Erechtheion, the old temple of Athena. They rest on an openwork circular base decorated with palmettes.
The stylistic vocabulary employed here evokes the art of antiquity. The numerous archaeological excavations in the 18th century, such as those at Pompeii, inspired artists to draw from and reinterpret the art of the ancients.
Its a fine bronze cast with a gilded matte and smooth elements. Brightened by the authentic light of the candles, an optimal reflection will be achieved.
They are both marked ‘F.Barbedienne & Cie’ on the base.
