Five Porcelain Figurines – Monkey Orchestra (“affenkapelle”) – Meissen, 20th Century

Set of five polychrome porcelain figurines depicting the famous “Affenkapelle” (Monkey Orchestra), a satirical subject originally created at Meissen in the 18th century by modeller Johann Joachim Kändler.The statuettes portray anthropomorphic monkeys dressed as 18th-century gentlemen, engaged in conducting or playing musical instruments, in a humorous and allegorical representation.
Four pieces bear the crossed swords mark in blue under the base, typical of the Meissen manufactory. The execution is of good quality, with fine details in the faces, clothing, and instruments. Some minor elements show restorations or glued parts.
Size: conductor approx. 16.5 cm; other figures between 12 and 13 cm.
These pieces form part of the larger “Affenkapelle” series, highly appreciated by international collectors.
