"19th Century French Relic Cross Of Saint Mm Alacoque"
This relic is dedicated to the French nun Marguerite-Marie Alacoque (1647-1690). Born in Verosvres on July 22, 1647 and died in Paray-le-Monial on October 17, 1690, she was a 17th-century French visionary and mystic, canonized in 1920. She greatly contributed to the spread of devotion to the Sacred Heart. As a child, she suffered from polio and was reportedly unexplainedly cured. She is said to have already had visions at this time. In 1671, she joined the Order of the Visitation of Mary (Latin: Ordo de Visitatione Beatae Mariae Virginis (OVM)) in Paray-le-Monial. On June 16, 1675, she received a vision announcing that from now on, a feast in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus would be instituted on the Friday following the octave of Corpus Christi. From then on, Alacoque energetically spread devotion to the Sacred Heart. She received the support of Claude de la Colombière, superior of the Jesuits of Paray-le-Monial. Marguerite-Marie Alacoque's mystical experience is part of a long tradition of the Sacred Heart, dating back to the 13th century. The first liturgical celebration in honor of the Sacred Heart was not authorized until 1765. Pius IX officially approved devotion to the Sacred Heart in 1856. Pope Benedict XV gave new impetus to this tradition by canonizing Marguerite-Marie Alacoque in 1920. The church of Notre-Dame de Paray-le-Monial, where Marguerite-Marie had her apparitions, was elevated to the rank of basilica. It is now an important place of pilgrimage.
The relic is still in good condition. It is sealed, with two damaged threads, mainly due to the hermetic lid.
Dimensions: 10 x 10 cm, 1.5 cm thick.
