Sculpture - Saint- Michel Slaying The Dragon , Emmanuel Fremiet (1824-1910) - Bronze
Bronze proof with brown patina , representing the Archangel Saint-Michel , defeating a reptilian demon , the dragon by the sculptor Emmanuel Fremiet .
Saint-Michel is standing , he rests on an octagonal capital , to which a dragon with bat wings clings .
The Archangel threatens the dragon embodying evil with his sword .
This sculpture is consistent with the monumental work of four meters in height hoisted on the spire of Mont-Saint-Michel .
At the Salon of 1879 , Emmanuel Fremiet exhibited a bronze "Saint Michel" executed by the publisher Charles More , the archangel defeats a serpent with a man's head .
In 1896 , the architect "Petitgrand" , who directed the restoration work of Mont-Saint-Michel , asked the sculptor Emmanuel Fremiet to enlarge his work , probably according to his instructions , the sculptor modified the base to adapt it to the architecture and transformed the demon .
Our sculpture is an edition from the second part of the 19th century , "Charles More Fondeur" , bearing the numbering "501", circa 1890 .
Bronze signed "E.FREMIET", hollow on the terrace .
Sculpture resting on an oval terrace in red marble (slight restoration of a small chip) .
Perfect state of conservation and patina .
