Account of five years of exploration among the tribes of the Sierra Madre Occidental, in the Tierra Caliente of Tepic and Jalisco and among the Tarascos of Michoacán
"This time we encountered cave dwellers. The Tarahumare Indians of the Sierra Madre, one of the least known Mexican tribes, live in caves to such an extent that they can justifiably be called the 'American troglodytes' of today. I decided to study this interesting people, especially the 'gentiles' (heathens), and as this was not feasible, despite the small size of the expedition, I gradually dispersed the whole company and ended up being alone."
