Similar figurines in wood, ivory, faience, and clay are typically found in Middle Kingdom tombs. Traditionally interpreted as representing the deceased's companions or "concubines," they are now understood to symbolize more generally female fertility, a powerful force capable of breathing new life into the deceased.
