France, Late 16th Century, Wooden Sculpture Of The Virgin Of Calvary, H 40 Cm
This 16th century Virgin of Calvary is made of carved wood with a slightly curved back.
At the origin of every Calvary stand 3 figures: Christ, St John and Mary.
This Mater Dolorosa or Mother of Sorrows (who stands), wears the veil and the wimple, as well as a long coat with marked folds, typical of Gothic art.
At chest height, she delicately joins her hands and expresses her suffering, her pain in restraint by a very softened and peaceful vision.
The execution of the face, the hands, the drapes is a very beautiful example of 16th century sculpture.
This sculpture is in good condition with wear due to time.
