A magnificent example of Italian Renaissance sculpture with an interesting history. The original was made in marble between 1455 and 1460 by the Florentine sculptor Desiderio da Settignano. Art historians have put forward different hypotheses; the figure depicted has been identified as Saint John. Thanks to his exceptional talent, many of his works were attributed to Donatello in the 19th century. The original was purchased in Italy in the 1840s by Eugène Piot. Over the next few decades, it passed through the hands of several Parisian collectors, before arriving in the United States in 1936. The following year, it joined the collections of the NGA in Washington.
