Assault On The Village With Clash Between Knights - Flemish Master 17th Century

Artist: Maître Flamand
"Assault on the village with clash between knights"
Oil painting on canvas
Flemish master
17th century period
Canvas 98 x 88 frame 108 x 98
Very good condition

The painting depicts a bloody and eventful battle scene between groups of knights attacking and others defending the nearby village. The clashes are set in a clearing in the woods and see the knights face each other with rifles and white weapons. The assailants are desperately opposed to avoid violence and abuse that can already be seen in some images.
In the foreground a woman lies on the ground decapitated after having suffered violence in front of a man tied to a tree, while in the background the silhouettes of tortured and hanged men can be glimpsed in the distance.
The duels between the knights of the two factions take place among the trees of the forest in every part of the painting, masterfully described by the author of the work.
The pictorial style, the setting of the scene and the fairytale-like atmosphere are the most typical characteristics of the Flemish school of the 1600s to which this fascinating battle scene must certainly be referred.
