Ancient Greek Icon
"The Annunciation"
Tempera on gold-ground panel
Larch wood
Late 17th century
Dimensions: 40 x 29 cm
A splendid Greek icon depicting the Virgin with her hands crossed over her chest in an attitude of great devotion, ready to receive the announcement of her divine motherhood. The image evokes deep emotion with her face expressing grace and purity, surrounded by a halo of light with distinctly supernatural tones. The gilded background is finely decorated with a rich burin engraving that outlines the halo, lending the figure a regal appearance and evident spirituality. The icon is in very good condition considering its age and the absence of restoration work; it is in excellent condition, with no cracks or lifting of the paint layer. The panel is painted on a single piece of larch wood, a hard and compact wood, resistant to wood-boring insects. Minor losses are limited to the peripheral areas. It is interesting to note how the signs of age scattered across the surface of the work, rather than detracting from its appearance, are highly evocative and enhance its charm and powerful Christian message.
