Son of Jean-Ferdinand Chaigneau (1830-1906), landscape painter established in Barbizon, Paul Chaigneau (1879-1938) was introduced to painting by his father and distinguished himself in his views of pastoral scenes, sunsets and flocks of sheep.

The canvas is partly detached from the frame in its upper part.
