Pewter pitcher with shoulder, oblique plinth foot, straight cup and molded S-shaped thumb rest of the Parisian type.
Control hallmark: crowned CC / (ETA)IN DE PA(RIS).
Hallmark of Charles PREAUX received master in 1724: crowned hammer / CP / P. (This second P for Paris)
Gauging mark on the inside bottom: SD (for "à la mesure de St Denis")
Height: 21.9 cm.
SAINT-DENIS, Before 1778.

Rare provenance. Area of pitting at the base and repair to the lid.
Established in Saint-Denis, a city exempt from duties, this master could not have them controlled in Paris and used this control hallmark.
These pitchers were the official wine measures of the Ancien Régime.
