Sterling silver pumpkin teapot, London 1848 – Edward John & William Barnard A superb English sterling silver pumpkin teapot, made in London in 1848 by the renowned silversmiths Edward John & William Barnard, one of the great British silversmith dynasties of the 19th century. The gadrooned pumpkin body rests on a pedestal with four richly chased foliate feet. The domed lid is topped with a fruit-shaped handle carved with leaves, reinforcing the naturalistic effect. The molded handle, fitted with ivory insulating rings, balances the slender spout. This teapot perfectly illustrates the Victorian taste for full, vegetal forms, both decorative and functional. Hallmarked London for the year 1848 and for the silversmith Edward John & William Barnard. Weight: 688 g Height: 16 cm (with handle) Total length: 27 cm Silversmith: Edward John & William Barnard Location: London Date: 1848 Title: Solid silver 925/1000 (Sterling) Characteristics: Typical pumpkin shape (pumpkin teapot) Finely worked solid silver Handle with ivory insulating rings Lid topped with a handle in the shape of a leafy fruit Imposing piece, very good condition
