Cartier-Bresson Family: "Family Photo Album"
The object itself is beautiful.
Its first cover, in bas-relief of engraved metals, I think copper, brass and silver, with a Japanese-style decoration of geishas carving bonsai trees while a little boy walks in traditional dress, is downright sumptuous and earned its creator a gold medal in 1878, I presume for the Universal Exhibition which saw 16 million visitors!
The content is more mixed: a poorly fixed photo has rubbed off on the one opposite, some have accidents and the album has the first cover detached from the rest of the binding.
Besides Henri the photographer who needs no introduction, the Cartier-Bresson family was also known for its industrial spinning mills. We find classic family photos of the intelligentsia of the time with some big names that we see on the back of those that do not have a counterpart on the back: Nadar, René Boivin, Eugène Pirou, Le Blanc, Le Gray, Mediyer, etc...
Some images are missing, but the whole is nevertheless homogeneous and is a beautiful testimony of the allied families: the Marchandise, Cartier-Bresson, Blazy, Dormeuil, Delavigne, Persent, etc.
