"3rd Quarter Of The XII Century - Central Italy - Upper Fragment Of A Cosmatesque Column"
Upper fragment of a Cosmatesque column in opus sectile. Third quarter of the 12th century, Umbria-Lazio region. Marble shaft with helical inlays of red and green porphyry, white palombino, and giallo antico. 5 different motifs alternate around the shaft of the column. Traces of mortar on the upper base, on which a capital originally rested. The lower base, where the fracture that separated our element from the rest of the column occurred, was subsequently chiseled to allow it to be placed in a vertical position. To protect the tesserae closest to the lower end, a layer of mortar and consolidating resin was also applied to protect and avoid stress on the tesserae closest to the end, which were therefore at risk of detaching. Originally, it was probably part of a cloister colonnade, given its shape and dimensions.
Dimensions: Diameter 16 cm x H 59 cm (without base).
Contemporary, but not original, travertine base included.
