"1220/1240 - Spain Or Pyrenees - Poplar - Corpus Christi"
Extraordinary Corpus Christi in poplar, a work from the Spanish-Pyrenean area, 1220-1240.Having reached us in excellent condition, although with few traces of polychromy (pink in the flesh, white in the perizonium), this splendid Christ of transition between Romanesque and Gothic is characterized by the finesse and refinement of the beard and hair. The eyes are closed but it seems that a look of quiet acceptance of death is still present in his figure, which does not seem to disturb him in the position of the body and the open but not twisted arms. The abdomen is tripartite and the lines that identify the ribs and belly are stylised and synthetic, this because the whole thing would then be finished with plaster. The perizonium is typical, as is the posture of the feet overlapping in this way which is typical of the Spanish area of this period. The arms are contemporary and pertinent. On the back you can see how the woodworms have worked hard, fortunately without damaging the front part (probably transferred from a cross adjacent to the back?).The wood also has some cracks due to time.A very valuable and rare object, in remarkable conditions.Dim. cm 72 (hand-hand)Dim. cm 73 (head-foot)
