Portrait of Suzon, after Édouard Manet – circa 1900
Oil on canvas
The original painting by Manet is held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon.
This painting depicts Suzon, the model from Édouard Manet’s famous painting A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, completed in 1882. The work offered here is an old copy, likely produced in the late 19th or early 20th century, after one of Manet’s preparatory studies in which Suzon is portrayed in profile, set against a vibrant blue background.
Her serene face, black dress and feathered hat compose an elegant, melancholic image, perfectly aligned with Manet’s intimate and modern spirit.
Suzon was a real historical figure, a barmaid at the Folies-Bergère. Despite the lasting fame of the painting, very little is known about her—only her first name has come down to us.
At the time, Manet was seriously ill and painted both this study and A Bar at the Folies-Bergère in the final years of his life. Unable to leave his home, he recreated the entire scene in his studio.
The original portrait held in Dijon, of which this is a faithful copy, is often reproduced on the covers of Manet monographs and art publications.
