A beautiful and highly decorative pair of large paintings under glass depicting two bouquets of flowers arranged in brown vases, set against a deep black background.
The compositions are enlivened by a charming menagerie: a bird, a frog, a lizard, butterflies, and a snail. This profusion of detail deliberately evokes the great tradition of Flemish and Dutch floral still lifes from the 17th and 18th centuries, in which flowers and small animals were combined in compositions that were both decorative and symbolic.
The under-glass painting technique lends the entire work a distinctive luminosity and a remarkable freshness of color. The use of mother-of-pearl in certain flowers and on the frog is unusual and reflects a highly distinctive technique. The flowers, rendered in a vivid palette of pinks, reds, oranges, yellows, blues, and greens, feature precise and stylized lines that lend these compositions a great deal of personality.
