"Double-topped Tea Table By émile Gallé"
This is a work by Émile Gallé (1846-1904), a renowned French artist, pioneer of Art Nouveau, famous for his creations in glassware, ceramics and cabinetmaking. The piece is made of marquetry, a technique that Gallé frequently used for his furniture, especially tables. The Art Nouveau style is characterized by motifs inspired by nature, such as floral or plant elements. But models with scenes and characters are relatively rare, especially this one representing musketeers on their mounts as well as pilgrims and children, even one accompanied by a dog. The particularity of this piece is also its Japanese-style structure with feet and handles reminiscent of the work of Viardot.
