Object description :

"Antique Tibetan/nepali Vajrayāna Buddhist Ritual Ghanta Bell With Vajra Handle"

A finely cast bronze ghanta (ritual bell), likely of Tibetan or Newari (Nepalese) origin, dating to the 19th century or earlier. This sacred object stands 17 cm tall and features a five-pronged vajra handle emerging from the head of a crowned deity — a classic symbol of the union of wisdom and method in Vajrayāna Buddhist ritual.

The bell’s outer surface is richly decorated with lotus-petal cartouches containing sacred syllables in Lantsa (Rañjanā) script, interspersed with scrolling garlands and the Eight Auspicious Symbols (ashtamangala). A lower register of repeated vajras reinforces its symbolic power and protective function.

The interior bears an inscription in Lantsa script, vertically arranged, featuring sacred seed syllables associated with purification and the Five Wisdom Buddhas — further sanctifying the bell and empowering its sound as a vehicle of ritual clarity.

Two traditional, old repairs at the base of the handle — carried out in situ, likely in Nepal — speak to the bell’s long devotional use and the care taken to preserve it. The original iron clapper is intact, and the bell resonates with a clear, vibrant tone. A deeply patinated and authentic object from the Himalayan tantric tradition, rich in both spiritual and artistic value.

Provenance: Private collection
Condition: Excellent patina; stable historical repair at handle base; wear consistent with age and ritual use
Height: 17 cm
