Sepik Initiation Mask, Papua New Guinea
Authentic object from the early 20th century, when Melanesia was still only visited by explorers and scientists. Origin Sepik, (it is a river along which live the iatmul, or crocodile men). Papua is part of Melanesia but it will be necessary to study all that. This polychrome ritual mask contains numerous symbols that only initiates can interpret. The impeccable aesthetics of this object are enough to appreciate it. the last picture shows that it was made with enthnical tools, even the whole of suspension is not regular.
