Bahau Dayak Mask – Borneo, Indonesia, Asia

A superb example of a wooden ceremonial mask, composed of several finely hand-carved elements. This type of mask is called a hudoq, which refers to the “hornbill,” although the term also encompasses a set of thirteen masks depicting animals harmful to crops (rats, birds, insects, or feline figures).

This ovoid mask features large round eyes, an enormous nose, a wide mouth lined with painted teeth and two protruding fangs, an elongated chin, as well as articulated ears topped with “horns” and adorned with metal rings hanging from the lower part, all crowned with a cap made of woven rattan fibers.

The mask’s cream-colored background is accented by broad bands of black, red, and white pigments.
