Our pastel is part of the time when Kees Van Dongen was still living from his illustrations of the "butter plate" that his friend Maurice Fénéon commissioned from him and his beginnings as a "fauve" painter at the Salon of 1905 which had seen his work representing his wife Guus naked and outrageously colored rejected by these judges and critics of the time.
