"Mumuye Statue – Nigeria – Late 19th / Early 20th Century – H. 59 Cm"
Tribal sculpture in monoxyl wood representing an anthropomorphic figure, from the Mumuye ethnic group, originally from the Middle Benue region of Nigeria. This statue, 59 cm high and 10 cm wide, embodies the traditional Mumuye aesthetic canons: slender silhouette, arms pressed against the body, stylized face with a half-open mouth, facial scarifications and prominent hairstyle. The work presents an old, crusty and nuanced patina, with visible traces of ritual use and natural erosion. Wood-eating wear is visible, particularly on the feet, old cracks and an irregular surface attesting to a good age and probable traditional use. No varnish or artificial patina. These statues were traditionally used for protection, healing or during initiation rituals.
