Object description :

"School Of Paris – Roger Dérieux – City – Mixed Technique – Signed"
This work belongs to the "Cities" series created around 1980.

Breaking with his evocations of the Lot or Ardèche countryside, Dérieux evokes here the density and speed specific to urban areas. He uses a beautiful combination of gouache and pastel, in blue and black tones, with plum and ochre highlights. The work seems almost in motion, pulled to the right.

The work is signed lower right. It is placed under glass, in a cream marie-louise. The frame is new, in white lacquered wood. The whole is in excellent condition.

The artist
Born in Paris in 1922, Roger Dérieux was the son of the poet and literary critic Henry Dérieux. His mother, a pianist, allowed him to grow up in an environment where music was very important. In 1938, he met Francis Picabia and, three years later, he began painting. Requisitioned during the war, he ended up in Salzburg where he painted buildings and theater sets. Returning to France at the end of the war, he enrolled at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and in André Lhote's studio.

A figurative painter, he was part of what was called "The School of Paris." He participated in numerous exhibitions with Debré, Poliakoff, Estève, and Soulages. With elegance and great economy of means, he painted still lifes, landscapes, and a few figures in the studio.

In the 1980s, abstraction became king. The work we offer dates from this period.
Loving the world of books, he produced around forty artist's books from 1950 to the 2000s.
In his last gallery exhibitions, Dérieux attracted the attention of an audience that was very fond of this discreet work with crumpled and cut-out papers. "A quiet art like yours," Ponge said of his paintings. But discretion is one of the virtues that painters should not abuse."
Roger Dérieux died in 2015 in the Lot region.

Roger Dérieux's works have been the subject of numerous public auctions.

The work is on display at the gallery (07240).
