The portrait of the woman is striking for the exuberance of her attire: flowers, lace, satin, jewelry... All of which contrasts with the rather severe air of Mrs. Schmitz. The man wears more discreet but nevertheless refined clothing, as evidenced by the embroidery of his waistcoat and the tie pin. He has a gentle expression and his hair seems slightly unruly.
Placed side by side, man and woman seem turned towards each other, but it is the woman who occupies the right-hand seat, contrary to custom.
The paintings are clean and in good condition. The canvases have been re-stretched, however, slight traces of the stretchers are visible. Some repairs are visible on the back, invisible on the pictorial layer.
The backs of the two paintings show two interesting elements: on the one hand, the signature of the artist, who dated his works. On the other hand, labels dating well after the execution of the works, which provide us with the identity and posterity of the people represented. These are Hartmann Felix, born on 29-10-1774 in Mainz, died on 28-11-1844 in Malesitz - as a property administrator and Schmitz Maria, born on 31-5-1779 in Mainz, died on 24-11-1850 in Pilsen. Both are the great-grandparents of Dr. Adalbert Hartmann, lawyer in Landskron, born on 6-2-1895 in Shumburg, as a regional councilor who died on 19-11-1949 in Pankratz.
The works are placed in identical modern frames, in good condition.
These works were created by Maria Staubmann, a painter known for her talent in painting portraits and bourgeois interiors. Little is known about the life of this artist, who died prematurely.
