"Rosewood And Sycamore Marquetry Shawl Box – Charles X Period, Circa 1830 "
Shawl box in rosewood and engraved sycamore marquetry – Charles X period, circa 1830 This elegant shawl box, made around 1830, is a fine example of the Charles X style, combining architectural sobriety and decorative refinement, in finely selected rosewood veneer, with beautiful deep veining, adorned with finely cut and engraved sycamore marquetry, typical of this refined period. The lid and front feature a rich decoration of fillets, stylized foliage scrolls, rosettes and scrolls, with clean and symmetrical lines, inspired by the neoclassical vocabulary. These motifs contrast subtly with the dark tone of the rosewood background. The box opens with a hinged lid and a flap on the front, revealing a large compartment, veneered in rosewood bordered with light wood fillets. The brass hinges and fittings are all original and functional. The original lock works with its key. This type of box was intended to store valuable shawls, often made of silk or cashmere, and was found in the refined bourgeois interiors of the July Monarchy.
