"French Porcelain Figures Of Musicians, Bloch & Sie, Paris, C. 1887–1900"
A rare and finely modelled pair of antique French
porcelain musician figures, produced in Paris by Bloch & Sie (later known
as Bourdois & Bloch)
between 1887 and 1900. Each figure stands on a
Rococo-style base with moulded scrollwork and floral elements, hand-painted
with gilt highlights.
The male figure carries a
drum (one stick missing, the other broken), while the female figure is posed
beside a harp with replaced strings. Both faces are delicately painted with
expressive features, and the overall execution is typical of the high standards
associated with the Parisian porcelain revival of the late 19th century.
Bloch & Sie were leading makers of Rococo revival porcelain during
the Belle Époque, producing decorative works that combined 18th-century
stylistic influence with late 19th-century craftsmanship. Their pieces are now
considered collectible representations of post-Sèvres French porcelain. The
male figure bears the underglaze blue crossed-line mark on the reverse, while
the female figure is marked underneath the base - the registered factory mark
of Bloch & Sie, Paris. From
a gentleman’s collection.
Condition: one drumstick missing, the other broken;
replaced harp strings; minor flower losses. No restorations. Overall excellent
antique condition.
Dimensions: Male – height 27 cm, weight 991 g Female –
height 27 cm, weight 621 g
