"Meissen Covered Chocolate Cup With Harbour Views And Puce Chinoiserie, C. 1780–1820"
A fine covered chocolate cup by Meissen, Germany,
circa 1780–1820. The cup and matching lid are decorated with full-color harbor
scenes and puce vignettes featuring Chinese figures, a distinctive chinoiserie
motif used exclusively in this color palette. Elaborate gilt scrollwork, floral
sprigs, and mesh borders enrich the composition.
The domed lid is surmounted by a sculpted flower finial flanked by two
applied gold leaves – a refined detail typical of Meissen craftsmanship in this
transitional period. Underglaze blue crossed swords mark to the base.
This is a highly collectible example of Meissen's stylistic evolution at
the turn of the 19th century, combining technical precision with exotic
decorative themes.
