"Joseph Cloix, Known As Van Loix (1856-1915), Tea Time In Tunis. Tunisia, Orientalist,pontoise.."
New beautiful oil on canvas by Jean Cloix known as Van Loix depicting an oriental scene in Tunisia, marked on the back "tea time in Tunis" circa 1900/1910, signed lower left. Canvas size without frame at sight 16x23cm and 26x33.5cm frame and marie-louise included. This is therefore a beautiful orientalist scene by Jean Cloix who here sketches tea time in Tunis at the beginning of the 20th century. As usual his drawing is superb, just sketched and his coloring very subtle with purple, ornate, brown, pink, vermillion or green; the artist also plays a lot with the canvas support by leaving reserves which gives even more charm to this study. Tunisia was one of the painter's favorite places, he painted there many times, in Kairouan, Tunis, Gabès etc... his market scenes, caravans on the outskirts of cities, but also pure landscapes. Jean Cloix is considered an orientalist painter, but he also produced many landscapes in France, notably in the surroundings of Paris, Pontoise, the Marne valley etc... In the past I had some views of these regions of very good quality, in the spirit of Galien-Laloue. Apart from that we know little about this excellent French painter, some of his works have achieved good results at auctions, with sometimes good estimates between 4 and 6000 €. This canvas is in good condition, delivered under glass in a marie-louise and in a contemporary frame, but it will be possible to frame it without glass of course. Work guaranteed authentic.
