"Henri Duvieux (1855-1920) "night Over Venice" Orientalist Painter 19th Century. Istanbul. Ziem, Guardi"
Superb and large oil on canvas mounted on panel by Henri Duvieux representing a night view of Venice, circa 1895/1910, signed lower right. Size of the painting alone without frame 65x50cm and 90x75cm including frame. Canvas mounted on panel a very long time ago, perfectly executed, surely by a professional, painting in perfect condition. Delivered in a sumptuous and imposing 19th century gilded frame, unfortunately it has many accidents (I have a large number of broken pieces...) this one is obviously restorable for whoever wishes; know that the dimensions of the painting are standard if the buyer wishes to change the frame. So sold with or without the frame, at your choice. This is a magnificent composition dating from the end of the 19th or the very beginning of the 20th century by Henri Duvieux: here he paints one of his favorite subjects, Venice, which he decides to paint at night. As usual, the work is very careful, already by its very meticulous drawing, thanks to a precise and detailed touch; finally his palette is most recognizable, he plays skillfully on chiaroscuro with blues, grays, whites, ochres that he illuminates as always with subtle touches of yellow and red in order to recreate an incredible light, in short, the great Duvieux, worthy of one of the best painters of Venice and Constantinople (or Istanbul), if not the best, a title that he often shares with Ziem, Ziller, Bouvard, Boucart etc....Henri Duvieux was born in Paris in 1855. Unfortunately, we find very little information on the life and training of this artist. We know that he exhibited at the Paris Salon from the age of 24, which is often a sign of great talent. A very good Orientalist of the end of the 19th century, Henri Duvieux excels in his representations of Venice and Constantinople. He developed a drawing technique that experts recognize among all, based on a structured construction, and which is close to architectural drawing. His painting is made of small touches of warm colors with which he brings to life animated scenes on the Lagoon or on the Bosphorus, and where the effects of the sun or the moon play an essential role. We know a large number of French and European painters who imitated, with more or less talent, the great artist Felix Ziem who was the specialist of Venice and Constantinople from 1860 to 1910. But Duvieux is not a simple imitator. His style is very particular, his compositions are his own. Unlike many of his followers, Duvieux's touch is quick, precise and spirited. If Ziem is the Canaletto of Impressionism, Duvieux is the Guardi of the Second Empire. Today his rating is very justifiably high and international. Work guaranteed authentic
