Object description :

"Bernard Loriot (1925-1998) Tugboat On The Seine. Norman School, Honfleur, Caen, Gernez, Sala"
ADORABLE small oil on canvas representing a tugboat on the Seine, signed lower right + titled on the back "B.Loriot- La Seine" Format of the canvas alone without frame 15x19cm This is therefore a very pretty post-impressionist composition by Bernard Loriot who paints here one of his favorite subjects, a bank of the Seine, here animated by a tugboat and a sailboat. We immediately recognize his very typical, very powerful touch and palette, with large flat areas. Bernard Loriot, born April 29, 1925 in Honfleur, died December 18, 1998 in Caen is a French painter. Bernard Loriot comes from a modest and large family. From 1931, he began to draw and produce watercolors. Self-taught, he trained by observing painters such as Henri de Saint-Delis, Alfred André Debergue, Paul Elie Gernez and Emilio Grau Sala who painted around the old dock of Honfleur. His father died in 1940 and Bernard Loriot had to work to help his mother provide for the family, while continuing to draw in his free time. Bernard Loriot joined the Resistance in secret from his mother. A volunteer at the Liberation, he followed the French forces to Austria. Demobilized at the end of 1945, he married in Honfleur on June 29, 1946. He returned to work to take on his new family responsibilities and gave up painting. But a work accident in 1950 immobilized him for several months. Encouraged by his doctor, an amateur painter, and his wife, he resumed his artistic activity. He sent his works to the Salons in 1951, he was mentioned in the local press in 1953 and a watercolor prize was awarded to him at the exhibition of Lower Normandy artists in Caen in 1954. He began to sell his works and never stopped painting. He inherited the pastels of Paul-Élie Gernez. His first solo exhibition took place in 1956. In 1958, he opened a studio with his friend Gervais Leterreux which served as his exhibition space for many years. In 1963, he met the Italian painter Dino Rossi with whom he remained friends all his life. His first solo exhibition abroad, in Belgium, was held in 1973. Loriot discovered Venice in 1975. He then held a series of solo exhibitions and traveled in France and abroad: Venice, Bruges, Germany, Paris… and sold his works in the United States, England, Japan, Germany. He lost one of his sons in 1977. Loriot frequented many painters of his generation: Jean Philippe Moretti, Jacques Bouyssou, André Hambourg, Raymond Poulin, Franck Innocent, Lavoine. He died on December 18, 1998. This painting is in very good original condition, delivered in a nice old frame, most likely its period frame. Work guaranteed authentic. The colors are much fresher in reality than in the photos.
