Object description :

"Fernand Maillaud (1863-1948) Tobacco Shop In Issoudun, 1902. Crozant School, Rollinat, Cheval"
I've reposted this listing because I bought this painting back from the seller who had left it with me on consignment, so the price has been reduced. Superb oil on canvas by Fernand Maillaud depicting an old horse-drawn carriage in front of a tobacconist's shop in Issoudun, Berry, in 1902. Signed and dated in the lower left corner, with a period cartouche inscribed "Fernand Maillaud hors concours" (Fernand Maillaud, not eligible for competition). The canvas alone, without the frame, measures 54 x 65 cm. This is a sublime and early work by Fernand Maillaud, painted in 1902, making it quite early in his career. He painted a scene from the Berry region with this horse-drawn carriage in front of a tobacconist's shop in the village of Issoudun, Berry, a place Maillaud painted extensively. In fact, I'm offering another work by Maillaud depicting almost the same location in Issoudun, on the avenue the painter called "Les Champs Elysées" (The Elysian Fields). Please see my other listing. As was his custom at that time, Maillaud employs an Impressionist touch and a most delicate use of color with Sienna earth, ochres, oranges, browns, yellows, greens, etc. A major and early work by this excellent painter of the Crozant school. Fernand Maillaud, the excellent and "reference" painter of the Crozant school, needs no introduction, not only for his views of the banks of the Creuse River, but also and especially for those of his native Berry region. His reputation is well established, even across the Atlantic where he enjoyed enormous success during his lifetime. Maillaud achieved fame thanks to his rustic scenes of the peasant world, but also with his famous market scenes; but he was also recognized for his Orientalist scenes, his views of Venice or Paris in his early years, some of which are preserved at the Carnavalet Museum in Paris. He was also close to the famous poet Maurice Rollinat, whom he sketched several times. His attachment to his native Berry region and to the Creuse department earned him a place among the finest painters of the Crozant school, alongside artists such as Detroy, Guillaumin, and Alluaud. His popularity was thought to be waning, yet his paintings have recently sold extremely well, reaching peaks of over €3,500. He is an emblematic painter of the Crozant school, as well as the Provençal school, and is also renowned for his Orientalist scenes, portraits, tapestries, and even sculpted furniture. This large canvas is in perfect condition and comes in a substantial and sumptuous period gilt-stained frame. I can also sell this work without the frame for €280 less, making the price €1,620, as you prefer. The work is guaranteed authentic.
