Antoine Guillemet 1841-1918Calvary in a village in the CotentinOil on canvas signed lower right 28 X 36 cmNorman by birth, tall and blond, he can be seen on Edouard Manet's “Balcony” and on Alexandre Grün's immense canvas “A Friday at the Salon des Artistes Français”. Guillemet, a companion of the Impressionists, met all the important people in Paris in the world of art and literature. He frequented Charles-François Daubigny's boat-studio, “Le Bottin”, as well as the Café de Bade and, later, the Café Gerbois. He came regularly to the Atelier Suisse on the Quai des Orfèvres, more to chat than to paint.
