"Portrait Of A Viennese Gentleman By Johann Peter Krafft (1780 - 1856) - Attributed"
Portrait of a Viennese gentleman was created created in the 1820s, and is a typical work by the outstanding Austrian-German portrait and military painter of the early 19th century, Johann Peter Krafft (1780 Hanau - 1856 Vienna). Its subject, style, and composition are very close to Krafft's own works. (See Monograph "Johann Peter Krafft" by M. Frodl-Schneemann, Herold Edition, Vienna-Munich, 1978.) Johann Peter Krafft became of crucial importance to Austrian painting. He was a leading history and portrait painter in the classical style in Vienna, but he also later had an influence on the development of genre painting in the Viennese Biedermeier period (through his painting Die Heimkehr des Landwehrmannes, 1820). Krafft created important historical images of patriotic content for Austria and its emperor's house. He was also active as a restorer at Schönbrunn Palace and the Jesuit Church in Vienna. Johann Peter Krafft affected the painting of Ferdinand George Waldmueller.
