Luc MONDRY (1938-1999)
Belgian painter.
Studied painting at the École St Luc, where he taught drawing and painting. A student of Gaston Bertrand for four years, Luc Mondry initially worked in the abstract style opened by his master. In the 1970s, the works described by critics as "Cistercian ensembles" were part of the revival of a minimalist non-figuration inherited from Malevich. Dividing himself between oil and watercolor, Mondry's art, with its refined and solitary color, was initially expressed in flat areas of simple form, essentially built on right angles. In the early 1980s, he combined chromatic variations and simple, rapid graphics, in continuous lines of more instinctive origin, stabilized again and again by these few horizontal and vertical markers dear to the artist. An inner and secret light reigns, born of a strange connivance between diluted color and the sheet of paper soaked with water. The 1990s were marked by more organic and primitive scenographies. He left a velvety and sumptuous work in the arrangement of forms, in the handling of hues. Founding member of Artes Bruxellae, numerous exhibitions in Belgium and abroad, retrospective at the Foundation for Contemporary Belgian Art in 1992.
