Educated by Elie Delaunay, he went to the Julian Academy where he was a student of Tony Robert-Fleury. He followed the advice of Gustave Moreau; participated in the decoration of the Rouché mansion with Albert Besnard and Maurice Denis. After the loss of his son in the 14-18 war, he was part of the symbolist movement imbued with religion and opened, in 1919, with his friend Maurice Denis the "Atelier d'Art Sacré".
