India for the domestic market
Rare wall hanging, summer rug or tent element in Painted Canvas or Chintz from India dating from the 18th century. Probably originating from Rajasthan or Andhra Pradesh, according to the learned techniques of the original Indians: Printing on cotton obtained by mordanting, wax reserve and brushed finish with a calamus. The decoration is a scattering of small flowers in the center on a yellow background with several frames of floral friezes and architectural ogives. A wide band on a pale green background highlights this Painted Canvas with a row of Thousand Flower Botehs, taken from Mughal art, like the botehs of Kashmir shawls of the same period. Note, a few tiny little holes, delimited on an area in the center, due to mordanting, and some period repairs in the top of the canvas (see the last two photos). A small black stain on one edge. Its overall condition remains stable, without major defects. Good general condition considering its age.
Dimensions: 194 cm x 202 cm.
