A beautiful portrait with elegant features, very well executed: particular care is taken with the skin tones, the highlights of the beard, the hands. Unsigned work, but of very fine quality, it recalls the work of Donatien Nonnotte, the great portraitist of the aristocracy in Lyon, to whom it is attributed.
Donatien or Donat Nonnotte, born February 10, 1708 in Besançon and died February 5, 1785 in Lyon, is a French painter, specializing in portraits. In 1728, he became a student of Lemoyne, who, recognizing his talent, entrusted him with the creation of important parts of royal orders.
The portraits he exhibited under his name at the Salon opened the doors of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture for him in 1741, as a portrait painter. Nonnotte's portraits are exhibited in the greatest collections and museums.
